Cornerstone Baptist Church

Seating for 2,200; 60,000 Sq. Ft.

Description:
Forced into three Sunday morning services to accommodate a 10% annual growth rate, Cornerstone Baptist Church first sought the help of Architects Asylum in Detroit, MI to design a 60,000 sq. ft. expansion beside their existing facility. When the conventional steel estimate came in at 25-percent over budget, they sought to find a more economical solution, and found it with Butler Heavy Structures and a hybrid building system. The key component is the 24,000 sq. ft. worship center, a fan-shaped auditorium with stadium-style seating for 2,200 where BHS utilized a steel substructure used in sports arenas to support the stair-step seating versus a concrete substructure for a much lower cost. There is also a round structure that provides 6,000 sq. ft. on two floors for a library/bookstore, café, classroom and lounge area; a two-story, 13,000 sq. ft. administration building that accommodates offices and classrooms and a lobby area of 8,000 sq. ft. wide open space for gathering. Three Butler roof systems were utilized, the MR-24® and CMR-24® standing seam roof systems, and the VSR™ architectural standing seam roof system allowed for a striking roof-to-fascia design.
