Heavy Structures designed and supplied the structural steel framing system for this 135,636 sq. ft. aircraft maintenance hangar designed for assault aircraft like the OH-58D Kiowa and the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
Energy conservation is a high priority in this facility utilizing insulated walls, roof, Megadoor® vertical fabric hangar doors, photovoltaic systems, and translucent wall panels to lessen electrical use.
The hangar structure was framed with roof trusses spanning the length of the hangar that support curved wide-flange beams that form the 352' radius of the hangar roof. Metal deck spans between the curved wide-flanged beams supporting a conventional roof. Horizontal bracing was provided between the bottom chords of the roof trusses to the vertical wall bracing that takes the loads to the foundation. The building is designed per the seismic criteria for special concentric braced frames. Special framing was provided over the hangar doors to support the Megadoor®. Parapet walls were provided at the endwalls of the hangar to enhance the architectural appearance. There is one 10-Ton underhung crane located in each of the hangar bays and two 2-Ton cranes in the office located in the maintenance room.
